Prostate Cancer New Diagnosis Nowadays many patients with a new diagnosis of prostate cancer face the dilemma of choosing the right treatment. This dilemma exists because of the uniqueness of prostate cancer.
Prostate cancer is a unique cancer for a number of reasons. First, it is very common in certain countries including the United States of America rising to the 2nd or 3rd rank of the most common causes of cancer deaths in men. Second, it is a very slowly progressive cancer that could take a couple of decades to threaten a man’s life. Third, most men with prostate cancer die for other causes of death such as heart disease and diabetes rather than the prostate cancer itself. Fourth, a newly diagnosed prostate cancer has several competing treatments that have similar effectiveness and various side effects. Fifth, it is now increasingly accepted that there are different levels of risk of prostate cancer ranging from very low risk to high risk. Sixth, new trends include genetic testing for risk of prostate cancer. Seventh, some cases of newly diagnosed prostate cancer including very low risk and low risk prostate cancer may be managed with active surveillance or observation avoiding the treatment side effects.
It is for the above reasons that many men with newly diagnosed prostate cancer struggle with their families to understand their cancer, its risk, the treatment options and their effectiveness and side effects.
Dr. Ridwan Shabsigh has long-term experience with counseling of patients with newly diagnosed prostate cancer, in addition to his vast experience in the management of the side effects of prostate cancer treatments, such as erectile dysfunction and urinary incontinence. Remarkably, he is in an excellent position of neutrality toward the different treatment options since he does not personally perform surgery or radiation therapy. Thus he is able to provide objective and individualized recommendations without bias. He offers a special consultation for men with newly diagnosed prostate cancer to help them answer the important questions, compare the various options, and understand possible side effects and their management. His consultation is based on a thorough evaluation of the individual man, his overall health, lifestyle, life expectancy, family history, special interest, type, stage and grade of prostate cancer, PSA, prostate imaging and other factors. His recommendations are based on a combination of best practice medical science and individualized evaluation.
